The Wonder of A Con

Creative Writing, a certified collective of passionate creators, artists, and moviegoers, headed by Timothy Gomez, attended the annual WonderCon at Anaheim Convention Center on March 27, celebrating the life of television, film, and science fiction. and anime.

Last year, Creative Writing students had the chance to attend The National Writing Convention AWP in Los Angeles, allowing for another valuable learning opportunity to discover one approach to writing and creativity. Daniel Strasberger, a teacher for Creative Writing, expressed how excited he was for the students to be attending this year’s event.

Some of the classes he has taught are Core Short Stories and Satire, Parody, and Absurdity, with many of his students noting he’s enthusiastic, lighthearted, helpful, awesome, and easygoing. Mariam Ghazaryan (CW 28) stated, “He makes his lessons feel less like a lecture and more like an interactive, fun learning experience.”

He has attended WonderCon for the last five years, and he usually tries to dress up.  “Honestly, it is just great to get lost in a Nerdy World with the students, seeing them in their own environment of loving comics and anime,”  Strasberger said.  He also revealed that he felt that the best part of the convention was opening up a brand new side of literature, media, and storytelling to future masterminds of brilliant stories. Strasberger listed some of the panels they tend to have at WonderCon: Star Wars, Comic Writing, and Pro-Wrestling, the latter being something he has taught at CSArts.

Students who were attending WonderCon were most excited to see how others dressed up, the panels and people in attendance, and meeting others in their fandoms. Shadow Gomez (CW 27) said, “At WonderCon, I’m super excited to dress up and meet some awesome voice actors.” Some of the students who chose to dress up opted to create their own costumes, piecing together anything they could find.

Two parent chaperones attended alongside Mr. Strasberger and Mr. Dante, who drove students to the event and checked in to ensure all the students were accounted for.

The booths offered the chance to speak to voice actors, buy cute trinkets, and books or comics written solely by people of color. Students walked around with their friend groups, exploring all that WonderCon had to offer.

Students said their most favorite part of attending WonderCon was meeting different artists and getting advice, seeing the art and costumes, meeting fandoms like them, and going to panels.
